THE FAMILY ALBUM
Tomas Terekas presents digital photography-collage series “The Family Album”, which he started in 2018. The artist uses his family archives to retrieve the photographs, which he then scan and retouch digitally. Tomas Terekas uses analog photographs and digital technology to signify two separate time periods: the analog photographs represent the past of the artist’s family whereas the digital edits mark the present time, and thus, Terekas’ life. The artist aims to look at his family’s history and a particular time period through the eyes of a child. By way of rewriting his family history using metaphor and irony, Terekas seeks to recreate and create those stories which he heard at an early age. Tomas Terekas purposefully combines different periods of time in his artworks: XIX c. and XX c. or 50’s and 80’s to provoke a nostalgic feeling. Here, color retouch gives an infantile feeling to Terekas’ artworks, as if these are the very first childhood drawings or coloring books. Artist’s photography is filled with irony to minimize the tension felt during the Soviet period. By playing with religious and communist symbols from the Soviet times the artist intends to mythologize his family’s history.
